The Maldives is a tropical country with warm temperatures throughout the year. There are two main seasons, and understanding the typical weather conditions during each of them can help you plan your trip more comfortably.
Average daytime temperatures usually range between 28–32°C, while the ocean remains warm throughout the year.
Dry Season
Approximately November – April
During the dry season, you will generally experience more sunny days and calmer ocean conditions. This period is often considered the high season for travel to the Maldives.
However, weather during the dry season has become less predictable in recent years, and occasional rainy or windy days can still occur.
Rainy Season
Approximately May – October
The rainy season still brings plenty of sunshine, but periods of rain become more frequent. Sometimes it may be a short tropical shower, while at other times stronger rain and wind can occur.
Ocean conditions are usually rougher during these months, and the weather tends to be more changeable and unpredictable compared to the dry season.
Guesthouses often offer lower rates during the low season, and many watersports, snorkelling trips, and excursions are still available. However, marine activities always depend on ocean and weather conditions, and excursions may occasionally be rescheduled or cancelled for safety reasons.
If you are not a confident swimmer or are travelling with small children, we generally do not recommend joining excursions during periods of very rough sea conditions.
In some situations, transfers — including speedboats and seaplanes — may also experience delays or cancellations due to weather conditions. Guesthouses and transfer providers will always aim to arrange the safest available connection to your destination.

Marine Life & Ocean Conditions
Ocean conditions can influence underwater visibility and marine life encounters throughout the year. Some experiences, such as manta ray sightings, may vary seasonally depending on the atoll and ocean currents.
Whale shark excursions in South Ari Atoll are available throughout the year, although sightings can never be guaranteed.
The Maldives is beautiful in every season — whether the ocean is calm or filled with waves, whether the sky is perfectly clear or covered with tropical clouds. Rain often feels refreshing after warm and humid days and is part of the natural rhythm of island life.
Some guesthouses also offer spa treatments and wellness experiences. There is something especially relaxing about enjoying a massage while listening to tropical rain outside — a different, but beautiful side of the Maldives experience.
While the weather itself is beyond our control, the way we experience the journey often matters most. Every season offers a different side of the Maldives, and many travelers discover that some of their most memorable moments happen beyond perfectly sunny days.
